Here we are getting ready for a beautiful, sun-filled summer! Most people tend to eat lighter during the hot months, but did you know the food you are eating has a direct correlation to your health? Do you often find yourself feeling tired, foggy, or with no motivation? Are you in a contant state of movement or do you come home and just "crash" on the sofa? Many are in your same boat and not sure what the root cause could be for the lack of "energy" they may be feeling.
Over 10 years ago, I realized that the food I was eating and feeding my family was just completely unhealthy. Pre-packaged varieties made it so easy to just pick something up and cook it in 30 minutes or less. It was all about the convenience! This is probably true in your household too, unless you have made the same revelation: Food is nourishment and healthy food is exactly what makes your body move. A perfect example of this is our wonderful feast day of Thanksgiving. Of course, everyone wants to bring the deliciously, perfect dish that everyone will ooh and ahh over, but the calorie laden ingredients have a cause and effect: It causes you to overeat and then effects you with sleepytime. No energy after that big meal? You can blame it on the turkey, but turkey is essentially good for you. It's the other heavy foods you are adding to the turkey which affect the chemical breakdown and promotes that "I need to take a nap" feeling.
Here is a more effective way to look at and eat your food. If it comes from the earth, is locally sourced and you can spell the ingredients, it is most likely what you should be eating. Most farm to table foods are exactly what your body and your family should be eating. Remember when your momma always said, "Eat your greens"? Not a cliche". The simple truth about clean eating.
When you fill your body with natural foods such as kale, spinach, cucumbers, avocados, berriess, legumes, and even eggs, (although most vegans do not eat animal products and that is ok) your body uses this food as clean energy. If you think in terms of that big pollution stack you see pumping out that dirty air, that is processed food and very dirty to yur body. Clean-eating looks like solar or wind power and uses natural resources to power your home. This same rule applies to eating. If you put in crap food, you feel tired, it promotes disease, and affects your quality of life. When you switch to clean eating, not only do you feel better and happier, but your body provides energy to your brain to help you sustain each day feeling alive. So get rid of all that extra pre-packaged baggage in your pantry and fill your fridge with fresh, natural foods.
